Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour Sift for a fluffier cake.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Consider swapping for monk fruit or coconut sugar.
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder High-quality Dutch-processed cocoa is recommended.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Works with vinegar for rising.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar Can be replaced with a plant-based yogurt for vegan adaptation.
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil Keeps the cake moist.
  • 1 cup water
Frosting Ingredients
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter Use dairy-free butter for vegan adaptation.
  • 2 tablespoons milk Plant milk can be used for dairy-free version.
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Create three wells in the dry ingredients. Into one well, pour the vanilla extract; into the second, add the vinegar; and into the third, drizzle the vegetable oil. Pour in the water last and stir everything together until just combined – be careful not to overmix.
Baking
  1. Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
Frosting
  1. For the frosting, combine the powdered sugar, butter, milk, and cocoa powder in a clean bowl. Mix until smooth, adjusting the consistency with more milk as necessary.
  2. Once the cake is cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top and enjoy your delectable creation!

Notes

For an elegant presentation, slice the cake into squares and serve on a beautiful platter. Complement the sweetness with a cup of rich coffee or a glass of cold milk. This cake is perfect for celebrations, family gatherings, or simply as an afternoon treat.
