Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth.
- Stir in the melted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract until combined.
- Add the flour, baking soda, and salt; mix just until the batter comes together.
- Gently fold in the chopped walnuts if using.
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
Baking
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- While the brownies are cooling, melt the unsalted butter for the frosting in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
- Spread the frosting over the slightly warm brownies and sprinkle with chopped walnuts.
- Let the frosting set and then slice to serve.
